The successful candidate will be able to perform the following duties:

  • Operate and maintain mechanical and electrical components of various surveillance radar systems.
  • With supervision, operate and maintain surveillance radar systems to include analog, RF and digital systems and subsystems including digital recording devices and display systems.  Example radars include Furuno S- and X- band sea surveillance radars, ASR-8 air surveillance radar, and TPQ-39/49 LSTAR air surveillance radar.
  • Be able to interpret electrical diagrams and electronic schematics, understand vacuum tube theory, diode and transistor theory and be able to troubleshoot high voltage systems.
  • Knowledge of digital and analog electronic fundamentals and the ability to troubleshoot to the component level are required.
  • Knowledge of test equipment operation for such items as signal generators, power meters, function generators, multi-meters, and oscilloscopes is required.
  • Serves as a team member in a team environment, working on system components, performing operation and maintenance activities with minimal supervision.
  • Completes daily radar log entries, document corrective actions and preventative maintenance activities using computerized maintenance management system.
  • Generates purchase requests as directed
  • Ensures all mission documentation and safety procedures are followed, test records are kept and comply with current ISO and CMMI requirements.
  • Ability to articulate clearly to other Wallops Range entities and management, as well as off-range entities organizations over voice nets is essential.

  • Provides communications for participating project or surveillance aircraft on assigned frequencies.
  • Conveys and monitors transponder codes to/with participating aircraft prior to aircraft entering controlled airspace.
  • Relays exit time to participating aircraft and reports critical safety information to the Range Management team.
  • Ensures range remains clear of aircraft following participant exit of hazard area
  • Monitors IFF air traffic within local area using the Air Surveillance Radar (ASR-8) and Starcon computer console interface.
  • Identifies and tracks non-IFF air traffic
  • Informs the operations management of impending incursions into restricted airspace, as defined in the WFF Flight Safety Plan, for immediate conveyance to the Surveillance Officer and Test Director
  • Provides full-time monitoring of near-shore boat traffic using the Wallops Island Sea Surface Detection System (WISSRDS) radars to identify and track participating assets and non-participating vessels.
  • Relays updates to operations management and other console operators at prescribed periods.
  • Assists in overseeing proper and timely entry of information from the Surface Radar into the Ship Surveillance Computer systems.
    • Associate’s degree in Electrical Engineering Technology experience in RF and Digital systems, military electronics schools and directly related experience or equivalent industry training and 2 years related experience
    • In lieu of formal education, candidate must have 4 or more years of practical working experience with radar systems.
    • The candidate must be a competent PC user familiar with MS office and special use applications for Radar set operations.
    • Candidate must possess mathematical skill necessary to perform algebraic skills necessary to solve radar equation problems.
    • Must be able to clearly speak English via two-way radio
    • The successful candidate must be able to perform physical tasks that include climbing ladders and towers, work in tight spaces with limited environmental control and lifting 50 lbs. or more.
