Job Details Summary:

  • This position reviews underwriting documentation, including the Annual Group Information Form, to ensure accuracy, completeness and adherence to corporate Underwriting guidelines, as well, as federal and state laws/regulations.
  • The Support Specialist assists in routine and ad hoc Underwriting responsibilities.

Essential Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

  • Completes entries into Access tracking database and/or Excel tracker when applicable.
  • Reviews underwriting documentation, including the Annual Group Information Form, to ensure accuracy, completeness and adherence to corporate Underwriting guidelines, as well as federal and state laws/regulations.
  • Identifies and follows-up on cases where additional information is needed or conducts further research if necessary.
  • Administers, files, and scans incoming Annual Group Information Form responses, including email, faxes, and paper mail.
  • Enters Annual Group Information Form responses through the Underwriting workflow.
  • Supports Underwriting with administration functions.
  • Meets and maintains underwriting quality and quantity standards established by supervisor.
  • Coordinates and resolves underwriting issues in conjunction with Sales.
  • When fraud is suspected, refers case to supervisor who will forward to the Special Investigation Unit.
  • Processes Intelligroup, Sale-to-Mail,and Siebel requests originating from the Sales department.
  • Processes and researches information regarding membership, benefits and claims information on multiple mainframe systems such as LRSP, FACETS, MABIL, U-WIN.
  • Researches and utilizes information Access databases, Dun and Bradstreet reports, the internet and other alternative sources of information as necessary and/or as requested by management.
  • Resolves internal/external customer inquiries by phone or e-mail in accordance with the underwriting guidelines and federal/state laws/regulations.
  • Exercises tact, patience, professionalism and perspective at all times in responding to internal/external customers, regardless of the issue or the customer’s demeanor.
  • Helps internal/external customers’ complete Underwriting forms, such as the Annual Group Information Form.
  • Prepares and sends correspondence as directed by Management or Underwriters. Assists with the development of Sales and CTA communications.
  • Performs ad hoc projects and all other duties as assigned by management .

  • Maintains high regard for member privacy in accordance with the corporate privacy policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • AAS degree in Math, Economics or Business related field or a minimum of one year’s related experience.
  • Basic knowledge of Underwriting rules and principles is preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of health products and alternate financial arrangements available is preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of federal/state laws/regulations relating to health insurance, such as COBRA, Medicare, HIPAA, Small Group Reform, etc. is preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of federal/state tax forms and different business structures such as sole prop, tax exempt organizations, partnerships, limited liability companies, etc. is preferred.
  • PC skills required:  Beginner level in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Access, Proficient in Microsoft Word.
  • Ability to navigate on the internet for research purposes.
  • Ability to communicate with internal departments and external customers, such as group administrators, in a professional manner.
  • Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize work in accordance with department guidelines.
  • Demonstrates strong attention to detail and follow through.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information, such as tax returns, with discretion is essential.
  • Willingness to take initiative to identify process and other improvements.
